How Do I Develop A Personal Brand?

May 21st, 2013

You get one shot at life!365_332

We should all act accordingly– strategically plotting a plan to do what you love! With all that in mind you should know that we aren’t convinced that people need “personal brands”. But, if you want to know how to identify and fulfill your purpose, amplify your authenticity, elevate your credibility, live in harmony with your values, express your personal code consistently through your character, decision making, and resolve…while driving your unique perspective, honing your thought leadership, and focusing your ambitions…If that’s what you want to do…then we applaud you!

The power of any strategy rests on the validity of the information that shapes it. Finding, synchronizing, and fulfilling your purpose starts with an honest evaluation of who you are and what you want out of this life. We recommend that you devote yourself to decoding the answers to the following questions:

  • What values drive your decision making?
  • What natural gifts do you have?
  • What really matters to you?
  • When do you feel most confident?
  • How would you measure your emotional intelligence?
  • What are you expert at?
  • What validates your expertise? (accomplishments)
  • What are the limitations of your knowledge?
  • What makes you credible? (perspective/experience/education)
  • What do you have the credentials to lead, direct, organize or govern?
  • What issues are you drawn to? Why?
  • What do you want others to know about you?
  • What do you want to accomplish with your life? (publicly/privately)
  • What do you want to contribute in your life?
  • Do you have a handle on the big picture?
  • What projects, associations, challenges, and service are you qualified to address?
  • How do you build an evidence based, value driven argument?
  • How does your argument express your values, address issues, and connect goals?
  • Do you know the difference between “right” and “effective” arguments?
  • Who benefits from or is interested in your knowledge, experience, and perspective?
  • Are you comfortable telling your story of self?
  • What outlets and platforms should you use to promote your ideas?

To thine self be true! Many people are missing the point and taking this “personal brand” to an unhealthy extreme. You want to be certain that you don’t turn yourself into a caricature of your authentic self by developing a persona and an agenda that is focused on what is valued around you (popular). Word of caution: If you find yourself buying followers on twitter, you have lost perspective!
